“Expanding the Circles”

This conference is hosted by the Australian Association for Bush Adventure Therapy (AABAT) and the 8th International Adventure Therapy Conference (8IATC) Local Organising Committee. For us circles are symbolic of communities, of inclusive practices and wholeness – expanding and contracting yet remaining complete and unbroken. They are also important symbols within Indigenous cultures, and are well used in a variety of ways amongst contemporary Adventure Therapists around the world.

Within the wide arena of international adventure therapy, the 8IATC will provide a space and place to explore:

  • where our practices intersect or overlap
  • where new and old meet
  • what connects us, and
  • what contributions we can make to improve living conditions and environments around the globe.

International Adventure Therapy is a field with ample opportunity for innovation and creativity, and we welcome your contribution.

A range of pre- and post-conference events are on offer around Australia, as well as a strong social program during the conference itself to enhance connections across cultures, professions and paradigms. International Adventure Therapy Conferences are held every three years and the host country is changed each time. The last IATC to be held in Australia was in 1997.

We are aware that the value from conferences often comes as much from informal and social interaction as it does from the formal program. Hence, in addition to creating a compelling formal program we are paying very close attention to providing a conference that has ‘heart’, that includes inclusive social events, a ‘festival atmosphere’ and that is family friendly. See details in other pages on this web site.

Our planning process involves wide collaboration with interested parties. The theme of expanding the circles means that we are keen to engage with associated fields such as art therapy, eco-psychology, youth justice,  psychotherapy, adventure-based learning and many others. Our intention is  to provide a conference that both connects you to a worldwide community of practitioners and blows you away!
